The SMSC

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC), a federally recognized Dakota tribal government, opened the SMSC Organics Recycling Facility in 2011, and expanded operations at a new location, Dakota Prairie Composting, in 2024. These facilities are part of the SMSC’s Dakota tradition of caring for the earth. We take what may have been tossed in a landfill and instead create high-quality compost, compost blends, and colored mulch.

Seven Generations

Seven Generations

Dakota people have lived in the Minnesota River Valley for hundreds of years. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) intends to protect and preserve the area for generations to come. The SMSC makes it a priority to plan seven generations ahead, and Dakota Prairie Composting is one of the many ways the SMSC works to accomplish this goal of being a good steward of the earth.

  • Through Dakota Prairie Composting, the SMSC also helps its neighbors. The facility accepts organic materials such as yard waste, wood waste, and food waste from several local municipalities and surrounding counties. Many hauling companies and cities bring organic materials to Dakota Prairie Composting, saving money, drive time, and the environment.

  • The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community owns and operates a diverse collection of enterprises on its lands in Prior Lake and Shakopee, Minnesota. From a tribal garden to two major casinos, hotels, and family entertainment centers, our enterprises help drive the local economy.

  • The SMSC enterprises create a complete, sustainable cycle for waste. Dakota Prairie Composting collects and repurposes organic waste from the SMSC’s many internal departments and enterprises including Mystic Lake Casino Hotel, Little Six Casino, and the Mystic Lake Center. The end product naturally enhances soil health on the SMSC’s lands including The Meadows at Mystic Golf Course, and the organic farm, Wozupi Tribal Gardens.
